Public SpeakingOn the fourth of October we had a public speaking workshop by Alan Devine. He started it by giving all of us a piece of paper with a joke on it, we then had to go up in front of the class and read it off. This showed us how to walk confidently and to have good posture.
We then did a game where we would have to stand up infront of everyone and make eye contact and gesture at a person for five seconds. We then played a game where we had to do certain moves to a nursery rhyme. Alan then told us how to write a speech and how to deliver it, he compared it to making a pizza, would have to make the dough and add the toppings (write the speech) then cook the pizza (learn the speech off) and finally deliver the pizza (giving the speech). Over the next week we had to write a speech for ourselves and give it the next friday. I wrote my speech about lamb we had a few years ago. Before i gave it i was very nervous but when i got up to give it i was fine. After giving the speech he gave me a few tips such as not sanding so far back from the audience. SpeechHello, My name is Stephen and I will be telling ye a story about a lamb we had on our farm. On our farm we have cattle, sheep and a few horses but I’ll be focusing on the sheep for now.
About four or five years ago during my Christmas holidays I went out herding with my dad, Some ewes were very close to dropping so I was quite excited to go and see if there was any lambs. So when we arrived at the field where the ewes were we saw one ewe by herself. This by itself wasn’t very unusual as ewes generally go off by themselves before lambing however when we where walking up we realized that something wasn’t right the ewe wasn’t moving at all. When we examined it we saw the ewe was alive but very weak and we saw half dead lamb curled up beside her. I carried the lamb into the shed while dad brought the ewe in When I felt the lambs nose I found it was cold, that’s generally a bad sign with animals but especially with sheep. So dad then produced a small bottle of brandy that he had left in the shed for a situation like this. He then fed it several spoonfuls of brandy with a teaspoon. We then brought the lamb up home. My brother and sister we very happy at seeing the lamb because we had only gotten back into sheep a few years ago and this was the first suck lamb we had but that was lessened by dad saying that it wasn’t very likely to live for long. Nether less we went to the shop to get milk substitute to feed it. After a few days of feeding it and it gradually getting stronger it looked like it was going to survive. My mother named it Laz after Lazerith who returned from the died in the Bible. After a week of it living in the kitchen with us dad brought it back to the shed to bed with two other lambs who’s mother had died, However they weren’t in as bad of a condition as Laz. My brother and sister named them cookie and tuffins. We continued to bottle feed them in the sheds for several weeks before letting them out with the other ewes and lambs. We bottle fed them out in the the fields for another couple of months before they were moved onto hard feed. Laz and Cookie then went onto have lambs of their own. What I really enjoy about farming is see how when you put time and effort into something it pays off. Wether it’s something like fertilizing the land and see the grass grow or its sending time feed and caring for a lamb it usually pays off. |
